A God of Delight
To be made in the image of God is to be made as a lover and delighter. This is God’s role, as revealed through Jesus.Â
God does not control or condemn. Rather, God loves and delights.Â
This is why God creates.Â
Because God wants to.Â
Not because God begrudgingly has to.Â
God creates in the same spirit that you and I might make pancakes. We make them because we like them. Â
God doesn’t make us out of staunch obligation. God doesn’t make things so that they’ll be OBEDIENT to God.Â
Obedience, control, or obligation are not the names of the game. Why do we twist everything in this direction? That is the root of sin/separation. We create a false idol of a demanding and controlling god. We create a god who isn’t there. And then we act like that god. The storytellers and characters in the Bible do the same thing.
But, no. God creates because it is good to create. God made us to love and delight in each other and in God the way that God loves and delights in us.Â
Time for some pancakes now.
