The disciples thought that Jesus came to be a militaristic savior. They thought his goal was to set them free from Roman oppression. (I mean, that was the most glaring and expedient problem in the headlines of Jesus’s day.)
But then there was the betrayal. And then the confusion. And the cross. The empty tomb. Followed by the resurrection. And then, as the dust of the ascension settled, it seemed to become more apparent (in a mysterious sort of way)…Â
Ohhhhhh…
Jesus didn’t come to set us free from Rome.
He came to set us free from… Ourselves.Â
He wasn’t here to give us power OVER people
but UNDER people.Â
