In Hebrew, the verb “to bless” is barak.
It’s used most frequently when God blesses humanity or creation. Blessing is an invitation into relationship with God. A call to abide in God’s goodness. When we do this, we experience the fullness of life.
Jesus’ invitation to the fishermen on the shore is to follow him. That’s it. There’s no content here about believing certain things, getting our act together, voting a certain way, carrying a certain ideology, etc. before we follow.
Just… Follow.
Hang out with him.
Dwell in the unconditional love and endless forgiveness of God.
God’s goodness is the foundation. Even though we are sometimes less than good, God blesses us with goodness again and again.
God imbues us with the goodness that you and I can’t manufacture ourselves. This is the blessing.
The wild, incarnate, eternal blessing.
But it is unlikely that Jesus was speaking Hebrew to the disciples.
