I had this insight while watching Disney’s newest version of A Christmas Carol - the one where Jim Carrey plays Ebenezer Scrooge (along with other roles)...
A lot of people’s vision of the Christian life looks like Scrooge on Christmas Eve. It’s a small life based on a small God who is a miserly bookkeeper. A life of staunch conventionality. One that clutches the wallet tightly and peers through squinted eyes at the world that it judges so harshly. It is a life of defense against “wrong behavior” and condemnation towards the so-called heathens who ruin everything. Who want nothing more than to take what you’ve worked so hard to earn...
But, I have to say, the exact opposite is true. The devil has twisted everything around. Because what I’ve discovered is this…
Christian freedom looks just like Scrooge, not on Christmas Eve, but on Christmas morning.
When he wakes up and realizes that he hasn’t just been given a second chance...
He’s been taken through his death and has been given a whole new life.
This turns his old curmudgeonly soul back into one of child-like wonder and he runs through the streets like a kid again. He’s turned outward towards his neighbors in love as he gives to the poor (with plenty of back-payment, for sure), raises Bob Cratchit’s salary, and joins his nephew for the party.
In Comfort + Joy,
Jonas
P.S. I’ll likely be taking the rest of 2021 off to hang out with my family during winter break. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU for all of your support here. It’s a joy to create things for you. Christmas tidings to you and I look forward to implementing some fun things that I have planned for this space in 2022. Until then, Godspeed!!
Jonas, may you and your family have a Happy and Blessed New Year!
Happy New Year to you and your fam. :)
