It’s easy to think that a good tactic in the war with evil is to keep constant eye contact with it. And today, the evil follows us around in our pockets, zapping our attention and sucking us into the abyss.
Sometimes, if you can, you have to look away, put it down, and go for a walk for no reason and to no destination in particular. Just go. Or bake some bread. Talk to your neighbor you haven’t talked to in a while. These things will be legions more effective in your efforts than staring the abyss in the eye.
I don’t need constant reminders in my pocket throughout the day, every day, that the world is full of disaster. This world didn’t have to exist, but it does. I need reminders of its wonder. I’ll hang onto these for dear life right now.
Amen
Thank you for this meditation, Jonas.
