The idols of performance and prowess

A Lenten reflection

I was just thinking…
Maybe a good thing
to give up for Lent
isn‘t meat or soda
or cheese or chocolate

but the idols of performance and prowess
that so plague our culture today.

Maybe this is just the ascetic practice
that we need
to aid in realizing the heaven
that is present on earth in Christ
when false gods such as these
are seen for the dangerous illusions
that they are.
