I love the liturgical season of Epiphany (which started yesterday). It’s a season that taps into the mystical and spiritual heart of Christianity. It is steeped in the mysterious workings of the Holy Spirit.
Neither you nor I can manually activate an epiphany. Epiphanies don’t come on demand.
I can sit here and write to you about God in Jesus Christ all night long. But if it doesn’t hit your heart and arrest your mind… It doesn’t matter.
If the Holy Spirit ain’t doing Her thing,
God will not be made manifest in this moment.
An Epiphany (in the biblical sense) is an act of God. As Rev. Fleming Rutledge writes in her excellent book about Epiphany, “Any manifestation that reveals Jesus’ true identity occurs because the power of God is at work upon the eyes, ears, and hearts of the recipients.”
We cannot spark faith through reason or logic. It can only be ignited in the human heart by a mysterious force that is always at work in ways far more intricate than either of us can imagine.
I pray an epiphany happens upon you, leaving you enraptured in a love that both creates the cosmos and blooms the rose. May this love become manifest for you at just the right time and place. Amen.
In Joy,
Jonas+
I christened my Epiphanies Pockets of Perfect Peace. They come unexpectedly and are the most marvelous experiences.
