We have this ribbon plant in our house hanging in the hall. Today, alas! I noticed a small flower springing from one of its many leaves.
What a prophetic flower, boldly radiant against the mediocrity of the adjoining leaves who all look the same just hanging there in their drab flowerlessness. What a small act of radical joy this little guy was shining forth!
The first thing my rational brain wondered was - Is this normal for a ribbon plant to sprout flowers? I could’ve looked it up, but I didn’t want to (still don’t). Why would I want to ruin this miracle right before me. If ignorance is bliss, well, sign me up.
Even if other buds start to sprout, I don’t care. I still commend this little chap for going first. For saying in the middle of January - You know what? It’s spring to me.
If the ribbon leaves were a crowd, I imagine the one the flower is on to be blushing a bit like, Sorry, yeah, a little early. I know everyone is trying to sleep.
Let ‘em sleep, little flower.
Let ‘em sleep.
Someone’s gotta go first.
Might as well be you.
In Joy,
Jonas+
That put a little spring in my step
Just what I needed on a cold and blustery morning. Even the birds sit shrunken into their wings.
