The story of Jonah is a call story. It’s about God’s active eternal Word which moves through the world and does things in people’s lives.
Really, it’s a story about vocation and begs us to ask…
Where is God moving me right now?
Vocational discernment isn’t just for young folks. People are pivoting mid-career more than ever (Alex gave a TEDx Talk many moons ago that speaks to this).
It also turns out that we humans are living longer. I heard from a friend the other day that there’s a whole growing field out there of counselors and coaches helping retired folks who still have decades to live do their next thing.
And now, since more seasoned folks have already retired from the j-o-b that maybe they felt they HAD to do to pay the bills and keep food on the table… Now that the nest is empty and their kids have kids of their own… Now that they have some retirement money or social security income coming in… They can actually do what they’ve always wanted to do without the intense pressure of young adult life. In a lot of cases, their next thing is THE THING.
What a hopeful season of life. It’s not over until it’s over (and even then, if we believe the Gospel, even then, we’re still just getting started).
In Joy,

I have been hoping to do that. For the past four years, I’ve been trying to break into the non-profit sector, especially a Catholic one. Thus far I’ve been rebuffed too many times to keep track. I worked in newspaper and then radio advertising for over 30 years and really wanted to pivot to doing something for the least of my brothers. Funny, my old newspaper that laid me off three years ago has reached out to me about a position. God has such a sense of humor.
