The aim of self-help or personal development is practical. It should help you get from point A to B.
Christianity is not self-help. Jesus isn’t about getting us from point A to point B. Jesus is about giving us freedom now, right here at point A and four-sevenths or wherever we are. The Gospel is about putting an instant end to the old, false self that always feels inadequate and raising up the new Self authenticated in the resurrection of Christ. The old self is helpless. You can feed it the world and it’ll still want more. Therefore, it can only be ended.
Self-help isn’t bad! Go get some of that help! It can be practical. Get your money right. Tweak your productivity. Build up your relationships. Whatever you want to do.
But self-help isn’t a worthy religion. As for me, I need the religion that ends all religion. And the only place I’ve found that is in Jesus.Â
