Verticality
I wrote a little bit of a longer essay today on verticality. Here’s a snippet…
In normal everyday human life — especially in today’s world — we mostly live horizontally. Our eyes don’t drift much above the horizon line. Especially now that we all have phones that we’re staring down at. My posture used to be incredible before I had a iPhone. Now, I’m battling a curved-in spine like crazy because I’m constantly looking at my phone. It’s awful.
But when you walk into one of these old churches, your eyes are drawn toward the sky. It’s like God uses the architecture to grab us by the chin and thrust it heavenward.
This sacred physical dynamic of verticality gets us out of our meager horizontal existence and shows us a different plane of being.
I hope you enjoy it. You can read it in full here.
