As a Christian, I don’t see this life as a battle to be constantly fought against enclosing forces of evil. The cross reveals that the battle has already been won. It is finished. Satan is merely an outlaw who still wreaks havoc wherever he can, indeed. But if we knew that the battle has already been won, maybe we could see his temptations and urgings in the proper light: insignificant and desperate.
Satan has never stood a chance. As Christians, we have the pleasure of declaring that though the night remains dark, the Kingdom has come with love, service, and peace in every tiny little corner that we can declare it. We can dedicate everything to the glory of God - our homes, our yards, our living rooms, kitchens, dishwashers, bikes, and gardens… And yes, this new year we’re turning our calendars to. We can dedicate it all into the loving and capable hands of the Holy Spirit that dances around in our midst redeeming every last thing to its original sacredness.
And then, when someone who has been hoodwinked by Satan’s hijinks crosses your path, they’ll see it. They’ll see that their own defeat is merely an illusion and that God has won. God has named them and claimed them and brought them home. Home where they have never truly left. And home that has never left them.
In Christmas Joy,
