There’s an old (but not that old) story about the Story that says that there is a chasm of separation between us (humanity) and God. As the story (about the Story) goes, this separation doesn’t just exist in the cosmic realm. It exists within our very nature.
How do we bridge the gap, one might ask?
The story about the Story tells us that there really is no way. It says that the separation is baked into our human nature. The chasm would remain even if we built a bridge and could walk right next to God.
The only option, it seems, is to aim for disembodiment. To escape or deny our humanity.
This just seems like such a weird way to tell the Story when the Story includes a God who became human. A God who wanted to not just be next to us, but to be one with us.
I don’t see a story of separation here.
I see a Story of invitation, participation, and intimacy.
I’ll go so far as to say this…
The only separation that seems to exist (I know, I feel it often too)
does not exist at all.
