It’s been really ominous these last few days when I walk around my neighborhood here in Chicago. Kind of like I’m in a zombie movie I’ll round a corner and see that someone is walking towards me on the sidewalk. I know that we’re supposed to be “social distancing” right now, but I’m cognizant to not be too awkward about it (which is hard for me because I’m a pretty awkward guy). I skootch over just beyond the right side of the sidewalk. If they walk along the other side of the sidewalk, that puts us at about 5 to 6-feet away
You are right on the mark Jonas. Thankfully, I live out in the sticks of Henderson, NV and rarely see anyone when walking the dogs, but....I always wave when a car goes by. I don't think I'm transmitting anything but happiness and good will. Perhaps next time that happens, you could just say "Good morning!" and continue your walk. Maybe that will remind people that a smile and a quick acknowledgement goes a long way in reestablishing humanity to something normal.
I so love your writing! Thank you for sharing this gift with the world. I live in suburban San Antonio and I have found that it has actually helped me meet my neighbors. People are actually home instead of driving here and there. They are out walking their dogs or walking as a family. They are playing in their front yards and driveways, where the basketball hoop is or where the littles have room to ride bikes and trikes. I have lived in my house two years and actually just met the teenage son of my next door neighbors. How cool is that? We have all been cautious of the physical distancing, but more connected socially, at least in this little way. It has been a silver lining of this dark, ominous cloud.
I found this really appropriate, given that we are now on lockdown in the UK too. We live in a beautiful area, the Lake District and have wonderful neighbours too. Isolation from these God-given blessings is such a shame.
I’ve passed your blog on to a group of amateur local artists I belong to, knowing that they’ll find it thought-provoking like most of your publications.
