To be reconciled isn’t to change God’s mind about us. Like, He was really mad at us before, but now, He’s good (He’s kind of sulking a bit, but he’ll be okay).
To be reconciled with God is to hear God’s eternal love for you (yes, YOU) and to suddenly be able to whisper “amen” to it.
Reconciliation is to start to be able to entrust God with ‘the things above’ - things like our destiny and worth.1 To lay off the reins attached to the fake wooden horses we’ve built.2 To actually WANT God to take over things of ultimate concern3 and to let God be God. To allow God the freedom to do what She does and has always done ‘above’ so we can be free to enjoy this stint as created beings imaging Her love in the world below. To be reborn as molded masterpieces and recipients of God’s love, mercy, and enjoyment steeped in authentic gratitude in the midst of even the deepest sorrow.
Reconciliation is the ultimate trust fall.
Can you feel those shoulders relax?
Yeah… That’s the good stuff.
God has established those in our baptismal name: “the beloved.”
I mean, how cute of us, really.
Which God already has, but still…
