Due to the general busyness of the last year or so, my contemplative practice has been slacking.
I know… God still loves me. God doesn’t ‘require’ me to do this (or anything, really). That’s not the issue at hand.
The issue is, unless I take time to sit and sink into my creator's oceanic love and presence, I easily default to living as if it were not so.
Anyhow, yes… I’ve been away from my practice, but I’ve made my way back to it recently. What a difference a simple 15-minute sit makes in the day.
I haven’t always been big on music while meditating. But I found a fantastic playlist that I’ve been using as a backdrop lately. I wanted to (1) share it with you (if you use Spotify) and, more importantly, (2) let you know what I noticed about what kind of music best accompanies meditation.
Good meditation music carries a drone throughout the song.
What’s a drone? That's a great question. I’m no music major, but I’d describe it as a continual tone that plays throughout the song. In my experience, this tone is usually a base note.
Yes, the drone is the key…
I HAVE A DEAR FRIEND WHO EQUATES A MUSICAL DRONE TO GOD.
He went through a season of deep doubt - a dark night of the soul in its truest sense. It was in this season that he said the drone… Stopped.
Like a true mystic, my friend put it in the sense of the via negativa (to describe something - mostly God - by saying what God is NOT). He never noticed the proverbial drone before, but now it was silent. It remained silent for a good while. I forget his exact words, but essentially, his life became flattened. The depth was removed. And then, the drone returned and this time, he recognized it.
So yes, the drone… God. The proverbial base note through life that stabilizes us. That keeps us grounded in the depth of beingness…
Okay, here’s that playlist. Do enjoy…
I don’t meditate, and when I’m diving into the Word, I prefer silence, not background music/noise. However, I did listen to the music for a bit when I went back to my Bible study in hopes of finding the words that were missing this morning (I do an online Bible study with my church family through the Bible app where we can share insights or thoughts). I found the words, so maybe the background music helped.
